Barn Owls are beautiful and widespread members of the owl family. They can be found virtually anywhere besides polar and desert regions. Barn owls use their acute hearing and sight to locate prey and their near silent flight allows them to plunge down and capture their meal. The Barn Owl's wingspan can be anywhere from 27 to 41 inches across. They have long wings, and a short square tail that can help distinguish them from other owls in flight. They feed almost exclusively on small rodents, particularly mice, rats and voles. They will also eat birds, reptiles, insects, rabbits and bats. They listen intently for prey and when they hear movement, they dive silently to the ground and grab it with their talons. Barn Owls can be found on every continent except for Antarctica. In Africa they are not found in the Sahara Desert. In North America they are generally found south of Canada.
